A DIGITAL LITERACY PROGRAM WITH MALAYSIAN ICT VOLUNTEERS (MIV)
A Digital Literacy Program with Malaysian ICT Volunteers (MIV) (Program Literasi Digital Bersama Sukarelawan MIV) was successfully held on September 30th 2021 and was attended by more than 200 students from the Foundation of Management, Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), and other communities. This program is organized by the Institute for Advanced and Smart Digital Opportunities (IASDO), School of Computing (SOC), UUM, Pusat Internet Komuniti (PIK), and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). Its aim is to educate communities to develop and safely use information and communication technology (ICT) applications and services that are beneficial in daily life.
This sharing session was delivered by three highly experienced MIV volunteers, namely Madam Hayati Rejab, Miss Wan Suriyani Wan Senu, and Miss Nur Aisyah Abdullah. Three topics that are highly relevant for increasing ICT awareness were covered by the MIV panels—eWaste, Love Scam, and Internet Addiction (Ketagihan Internet).
The eWaste session focused on the strategies consumers can use to dispose of old mobile phones without harming the environment, whereas the Love Scam panel focused on conveying the importance of not believing people online quickly and providing examples of ways in which the scammers act to manipulate their victims. In the Internet Addiction session, the attendees learned the advantages and disadvantages of the internet to young adults and how to limit the time spent online. The speakers also offered information aimed at raising the public awareness of the importance of safe internet use. Therefore, this program was highly beneficial as it raised the participants’ ICT knowledge and awareness.
