UUM made history of sorts when the university become a part of a consortium that was awarded the ERASMUS + grant under the European Union. This provides UUM an opportunity to work with Universiti Malaya, the premier multidisciplinary Research University in Malaysia under the BRECIL Project, or acronym for Building Social Research Capacities in Higher Education Institutions in Lao PDR and Malaysia.  The program country higher education institutions include Gothenburg University (Sweden), Groningen University (Netherlands) and University of Applied Linguistics (Germany). National University of Laos and Souphanouvong University in Laos PDR will also participate. This project will take three years period and the role of UUM is in the field of IT and research. It is a golden opportunity for UUM to move towards international collaboration in which participant countries can share knowledge and learn from the academic engagement to empower researchers.

Two key members of the Universiti Malaya team paid a visit to School of Computing to discuss matters related to the partner universities. Prof. Dr. Azirah Hashim (Executive Director of Asia-Europe Institute and Director of Centre for ASEAN Regionalism University of Malaya) who was the principal applicant for the grant, and Mr. Yee Chee Leong, Project Manager of the BRECIL Grant. The UUM team comprising the Project Coordinator for UUM, Dr. Hariharan N. Krishnasamy, Prof. Dr. Huda Ibrahim , Assoc. Prof Dr. Azman Yasin, Dr. Mazida Ahmad , Dr. Mazni Omar and Assoc. Prof Dr. Noor Hashima Abd. Aziz.  Also joining the meeting was the Director of RIMC, Prof. Dr. Mohd. Azizuddin Mohd. Sani, the Deputy Director of RIMC, Assoc. Prof. Dr Rozita Arshad, Mr. Hisaruddin and Madam Suraya Deraman.
