PUBLICATION VISIBILITY TO INCREASE CITATIONS: INITIATIVE THROUGH OPEN ACCESS UUM REPOSITORY
SOC ONLINE: Four talks in three hours! A history recorded at the School of Computing (SOC) on 21st August 2017 where four distinguish and knowledgeable speakers; Assoc. Prof. Sr. Dr. Mohd Nasrun Mohd Nawi, Deputy Director (Publication) of RIMC, Puan Hasma Harun, Puan Norihan Anah and Puan Siti Norain Ismail who are Librarians from Perpustakaan Sultanah Bahiyah (PSB) shared their knowledge on how to increase the visibility of the academic publication.
Leading the talk, Assoc. Prof. Sr. Dr. Mohd Nasrun emphasized that all academician should publish and the priority must be given to the SCOPUS and Web of Science indexed journal. Assoc. Prof. Sr. Dr. Mohd Nasrun also shared some strategies to boost the citation number. One of the strategies he highlighted is to upload the article into the open access repository.
Prior to the havoc of indexing and citations, the Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) through PSB has taken early initiative by developing the University Archives and Institutional Repository (http://repo.uum.edu.my/). The archive is aimed to preserve all documents related to UUM which include publication articles. “We help you to preserve your work and you can refer it back whenever you want to”, stressed Puan Hasma a Senior Librarian who is among the UUM Archive founder. The archive keeps all the printed documents, while the digital versions were uploaded into the UUM Repository.
UUM Repository is searchable and most of the articles are open access. Puan Norihan demonstrates how to access the repository and upload one’s own article into the repository. The content of the repository has been archived by numerous databases including Google Scholar. According to Puan Norihan, her division will check and verify all articles before the inclusion. The copyrighted articles will be classified as restricted access and will be linked to the actual publisher website to avoid any copyright infringement.
At the end of the session, Puan Siti Norain introduces Malaysian Academic Library Institutional Repository (MALRep) which is a gateway to access repositories of other university in Malaysia. Through MALRep, user may search for over 489,648 open access materials from 22 Malaysian university libraries. On top of serving as a medium of knowledge sharing among universities in Malaysia, MALRep also can increase the visibility of UUM publication nationwide.
